Behind a baroque façade and in the center of the Prague Castle area is this basilica, which has an unexpected sobriety. The panoramic views from the white towers of the basilica are one of the best known in Prague. Roman remains of incalculable value, the cathedral, as well as the convent of St. George, served as a royal mausoleum during the Middle Ages.
The church's visit is independent of the rest of the convent, which houses nineteenth-century art collections owned by the National Gallery.
The Church of St. George, founded in the year 920, was together with St. Vitus Cathedral one of the first stone buildings built in Prague Castle. The current building recalls the middle of the twelfth century, when the convent was destroyed by a terrible fire.
The whiteness of limestone, the massive character of its columns ... each element offers austerity and solemnity, which contrasts with the bucolic interior.
A long time ago, the church served as a burial place for members of the Přemyslida dynasty, which included St. Ludmila, the Christian grandmother of St. Wenceslas. The remains of Santa, patroness of Bohemia, were transferred in the twelfth century to a tomb carved by Peter Parler, architect of the Cathedral, located in the chapel which bears the name of St. Ludmila. Most of the tombs are found on the ground, except for the remains of Vratislas I, buried in a carved cabinet dating from the 14th century.
In the western part of the building you can admire a magnificent self-portrait depicting St. George and the Dragon, surrounded by a portrait of Bohemian Renaissance principles by Bénédikt Ried, a talented architect of the former Royal Palace's Vladislao Hall.
The convent of St. George is adjacent to the church. In the 970s, the Benedictine nuns took over the place to found the oldest convent in Bohemia. Composed of girls of noble families, sometimes coming from the royal family, the convent had a huge prestige during the Middle Ages. Closed in 1782, the convent was occupied by different institutions before being used by the National Gallery of Prague to house splendid collections of paintings of the nineteenth century.
