Tonina is an artificial hill of 7 platforms almost 70 meters high, with numerous palaces, temples and altars, where was created a unique caste of warrior princes that, between the sixth and tenth centuries, exercised its military power over all the cities of the Usumacinta river basin, including Palenque, Yaxchilán and Bonampak. Tonina's sculptures have a very realistic stamp and delicate features, unlike other Mayan sites in the region. The heart of this place is based on a 6 hectare platform, surrounded by a great architectural barrier, where temples, altars and ball courts were built. At 16 meters long and 3.30 meters high, made of stucco and polychrome, there is a mural that is an unparalleled work in pre-Hispanic art.







Location:



It is located very close to the population of Ocosingo, west of what survives from the legendary Lacandon Jungle.



How to get:



To visit the archaeological site of Toniná, you must travel 12 km of paved road northeast of Ocosingo, 86 km from San Cristóbal de las Casas on State Highway 199 and 103 km from Palenque on the same road.
