The Castle of San Sebastián is a fortress in the city of Cádiz located at one end of La Caleta beach on a small islet.
According to classical tradition, on this islet was the Temple of Moloch / Kronos. [1]
In 1457, a hermitage was built on the islet by the crew of a Venetian ship who were recovering from the plague. In 1706 the construction of a castle began, which gave rise to a fortified area with an irregular plan and which defended the north flank of the city. Inside it and on the base of a Muslim watchtower stands the current lighthouse, an iron structure designed by Rafael de la Cerda in 1908, the second largest in Spain and 41 meters above sea level.
In 1860 a boardwalk was built that serves as a link between the island and the urban area of the city. On June 25, 1985, it was declared a Site of Cultural Interest.
The original silhouette of this castle over the sea has made it the setting for several films shot in Cádiz, including the most expensive in Spanish cinema, Alatriste, shot here in 2005. Likewise, Hollywood used it as the setting for action scenes in the film ´´Die another day´´ by agent James Bond, starring Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry.
The Spanish indie pop group Señor Chinarro mentions the Castle of San Sebastián in the song ´´Del Montón´´: It was close to the Castle / that of San Sebastián / of the boats that moor / on the seashore ...
