At the end of the seventeenth century, in the year 1772 the Spanish Manuel de Valverde founded the Buenos Aires population in the Guapi River, the first inhabitants were the Guapíes Indians located in the place called the Firme del Barro. At the beginning of the 19th century the decline of Guapi began as a result of the Civil War that began in 1811 and ended in March 1900, in addition to this scourge, Guapi suffered the ravages of the 1833 earthquake and in 1914 it was consumed by flames. Guapi was the capital of the old province of Micay, today Guapi is the head of the Judicial circuit, Registry, Notary and center of political and commercial activities in the region.

Since 1872 it has been the head of the District of Guapi, since 1911 capital of the province according to ordinance 103 of that year.





Guapí is a Colombian municipality in the department of Cauca. Founded in 1772 by several settlers organized by Manuel Valverde in the place called the Firme del Barro. The population of Guapi is estimated at 30,000 inhabitants (Guapireños). The main economic activities are artisanal fishing, mining and agriculture. The municipality of Guapi is located to the south west of the department of Cauca, and is bordering the slope of the Colombian Pacific on the banks of the Guapi River. Economy

SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIMENSION



The productive activities that are sustained as the basis of the economy of the municipality of Guapi, are closely related to the primary sector such as agriculture of coconut, corn, chontaduro, rice, papachina, in addition to other crops of the family pancoger; the same is the livestock production, especially the minor species of birds and pigs. In the same way, for an important sector of the population in the rural riverside area, the way of life is based on the extraction of natural resources such as hunting and gathering. It should be noted that the municipality is going through a crisis caused by factors such as the change in productive activities, desertion, the weakening of cultural customs, among others.



Fishing occupies an important line in the local economy with the multi-variety of fish, mollusks (piangua, clam, chorga), and crustaceans, among others shrimp. During the last years, the strategy of closure of shallow and deep water shrimp has been implemented in an attempt to improve the repopulation and reproduction of the species.



Mining occupies important positions of economic use, mainly in the middle and upper areas of the rivers, mainly with the exploitation of gold and platinum.



Timber extraction is exercised to supply the local market, but especially for the Andean region of the department of Valle del Cauca. Among the main commercial woods are very special species: Chanul, chaquiro, heron, cedar, granadillo and mahogany.

Given the location of the municipality of Guapi near the sea and the bank of the river that bears its name, it has many sites that have great scenic and ecological beauty related to estuaries and mangroves, as well as fauna and flora associated with it, the beaches imposing are formed by low tide, made up of gravel and sand, mostly covered by vegetation. - Bonanza and La Parcelas: The route can be done in two ways. He also says that on one occasion they went with some friends to the cave and they managed to look at a turtle, they were going to catch it but he went deep into the cave and disappeared, on another occasion the Cuerval came on his colt (means of transport that he uses a lot in rural areas to move from one place to another is in wood and he sails with a paddle or wooden paddle as well), when on the beach where the cave is said to end he saw a chola (indigenous) with the hair very long that reached below the waist, so I sail very fast and when I got to where she was she was already lost and nearby there was no foal or anything where she could have gone, and as the elders told them that in the cave There was a mermaid that could be seen in different forms of women and that whoever took the golden comb with which she combed her hair could become rich or be enchanted, so he went to see what his luck was, he does not know if it would be the mermaid or not. When he went with his group of friends they sometimes found prepared clay (just burned), people could be heard talking but no one was seen.
