By 1850, when the slave trade was already prohibited by law, Porto de Galinhas became a clandestine port for the sale of slaves.



The slaves who arrived there were brought from Angola and transported in the basement of the ship. On the surface came the chickens to disguise what the vessel actually brought. As soon as the news spread, there is chicken from Angola in the port



In fact this was just a code to alert the large landowners that the slaves had arrived. Since then the place has become known as Porto de Galinhas.
