It is known that when the Spanish arrived, Yumbo was an indigenous settlement, which had a shrine with steps and engraved monoliths, located on the Portachuelo hill. Some consider that by name it was related to the indigenous Yumbos of Ecuador, either because they were related peoples or because the conquerors, who came from that country, found them similar. However, yumbo is a word from the Paéz language that means "big river", "flood" or "river" and is probably related to the Calima Culture. The indigenous town was subjugated in 1536 by Captain Miguel López Muñoz, under the orders of the conqueror Sebastián de Belalcázar, who settled there on the farm that became known as ´´La Estancia´´. The town was named San Sebastián de Yumbo and its surroundings were established as an indigenous reservation. It was declared as a Municipality by Law 1 of 1864
At the end of the 19th century and until 1930, a river port, known as Puerto Isaacs, operated in Punta Yumbo, which served to make tobacco manufactures and coffee threshers flourish in the town and farmers to market their products. In 1914 the railway was inaugurated, transforming local life by accelerating business and commercial development.
Law 32 of October 14, 1920 abolished the Indigenous Reservation and its lands were handed over to the municipality. In 1936 an electrical plant began to operate and from 1938 industrialization began after the establishment of the Cementos Valle plant, located in the place where the port had operated. Later, the Cartón Colombia (1944), Goodyear (1944), Eternit (1945), Celanese (1955), Propal (1957) and Johnson and Johnson (1962) plants were established. Currently there are more than 2,000 companies operating in the municipality, of which 130 are highly polluting.
